MDS Covid-19 Procedures

School Hours:

Pre-Kindergarten – 5th Grade:  8:00 A.M. – 2:30 P.M.

6th – 12th Grade: 8:00 A.M – 3:00 P.M.

Before your child comes to school:

Please check your child’s temperature before coming to school each day.  If your child has a temperature of 100.4 degrees your child must stay home from school and remain at home until they are fever free for 72 hours without medication.  Please notify Mrs. Taylor by phone or email (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) that your child is at home sick.  If your child has any other symptoms which could be indicative to COVID19 please keep your child at home.

School Arrival:

7:30 A.M. – 8:00 A.M.

Upon arrival your student will have their temperature taken by a member of our Memorial Day School faculty before students exit their automobiles.  Any student with a temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher will be sent back home. Students will then report directly to their classroom.  Lower school students will be walked to their classrooms.

Any student who is tardy to school should report to their first period class.  Teachers will record the tardy and send names of students who are absent or tardy to the office.  Any student who arrives later than 8:50 A.M. must report to the office to receive a pass to class.

Attendance:

Attendance policies will be altered this school year due to COVID-19.  Excessive absences will be evaluated on an individual basis.  Perfect attendance will not be awarded this school year.  If your child is not feeling well please keep your child home.

Masks:

All teachers will wear masks or face shields.  Masks are recommended for all lower school students (Pre-Kindergarten – 5th grade) Masks are mandatory for middle and high school students.  Students may take masks off if they are outside and appropriately social distanced from one another and during lunch and snack.

Water:

Please send your child to school with a water bottle.  We have installed a touchless water bottle fill station next to our Chapel.  This will allow our students to safely refill their water bottles throughout the day.

Snacks:

Students may bring a healthy snack to enjoy in the morning.  They will be given a few minutes for a quick snack each day. 

Lunch:

11:45 A.M.  – 12:15 P.M.

All students and teachers will eat lunch in their classrooms.  Social distancing will be followed during lunch. 

Individual outside lunch delivery services (including fast food delivered by parents)  will not be accepted.  Students must bring lunches from home.  Microwaves will NOT be available.

The front office will have a small selection of lunch items available for purchase (lunchables, uncrustables, fruit cups, granola bars, and bottled water) if your child forgets their lunch. 

Cell Phones:

Students will be allowed to keep their cell phones with them. They will also be allowed to wear smart watches.  Please note that the policy outlined in our school handbook still applies.  Students are not allowed to use cell phones during our school day.  Teachers will turn cell phones into the office if phones are seen or heard.  Smart watches should not be used as a phone or for texting purposes during school hours.

Sanitizing:

Our faculty and staff are committed to keeping our school environment as clean as possible.  Extra cleaning will be conducted throughout the school day.  Special attention will be given to door handles, bathrooms, desks, and chairs.

Hand sanitizer will be provided for all classrooms.  Older students may wish to bring their own small bottle of sanitizer to keep with them throughout the day.

Recess:

Lower school students will go outside each day.  Grade levels will only go to recess with their own class.  However, one class may be on the field, while another is on the playground. All equipment will be sanitized after each use. 

PE:

Students will continue to enjoy PE class.  Equipment will be sanitized for the safety of all students and social distancing will be practiced.

Classes:

Pre-Kindergarten – Eighth grade students will be self-contained in their classroom throughout the school day.  Lower School students will still have specials, but those teachers will come to their classrooms.  Middle school students will also be self-contained.  Their teachers will come to them for their classes.

Highschool students are coming back to school on a hybrid plan.  Students whose last names begin with A – J will attend classes on Monday and Wednesdays.  Those students will remote into each class period each day on the days they are not at school.  Students whose last names begin with K – Z will attend classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Those students will remote into each class period each day on the days that they are not at school.

Tutorial:

Teachers will make themselves available for afterschool tutorials for all students.  Appointments must be made ahead of time with individual teachers to ensure social distancing during tutorial sessions. 

Chapel:

We will continue to have Chapel services throughout the school year.  However, Chapel will now be streamed on classroom televisions at a designated time for all students.

Large Gatherings:

Many of our beloved school programs will be cancelled or offered virtually at this time.

Athletics:

Memorial Day School will follow the guidelines and recommendations made by GISA (Georgia Independent School Association.).

Families and friends attending athletic events should practice social distancing and masks are recommended.

Hallways:

Our middle and high school hallways will be marked to illustrate the flow of traffic. 

Lockers:

Middle and High school students will not utilize lockers this year.  Students may carry their bookbags and utilize bookshelf space in classrooms as necessary.

Campus Visitors:

Although, we love to have guest speakers, parents coming to share lunch, and guest readers at school we are limiting our classrooms to our faculty, staff, and students.  At this time, we are asking all parents to visit the office to deliver a forgotten item or for any other school related business.  Please remember to wear your mask if you need to visit the office.

Dismissal:

Please place a piece of paper on your dashboard with your child’s name and grade written in large bold print.  Teachers will be utilizing walkie talkies at our dismissal time.  Children will be called and escorted to their cars each day.

Sick Students:

If students become ill during the school day they will be taken to the side room in the front office.  Parents will be called and asked to pick up their student within an hour of notification. Students who are sent home with a fever will be required to have a doctor.s excuse with a return school date and must stay home from school until they are fever free without medication for 72 hours.

COVID-19:

It is possible that a student may test positive with COVID-19.

Any student who tests positive must stay home for a minimum of 10 days, be fever free for 72 hours without medication before returning to school, and be free of other symptoms before returning to school. The school office must be notified if your child has tested positive.

Students who are considered to have been in close contact (within 6 feet and in contact for 15 minutes or more) with a person who tests positive will be notified.  Those students will be required to quarantine at home for a minimum of ten days, be fever free for 72 hours without medication before returning to school, and be free of other symptoms before returning to school.

Remote Learning:

All students have the option to enroll in remote learning.  Requirements of the program will vary among grade levels and directions will be sent to those choosing the remote learning option. School administration must be notified no later than Monday, August 10th if your child wishes to attend school remotely.  The remote learning option requires a first quarter commitment.  The option may be re-evaluated for a change at the end of the first quarter.

We have new technology for our teachers and have upgraded our school technology infrastructure to ensure we are prepared if the time comes for our entire school or parts of the school to transition to remote learning.   Our teachers are prepared to make that transition effectively and efficiently if it becomes necessary.

Travel:

Students who travel on a cruise ship or travel internationally are required to self-quarantine for a minimum of 14 days before returning to school.  If a family member has traveled on a cruise ship or traveled internationally and is NOT self-quarantining that student must quarantine at home as well.

Communication:

Communication is essential to the school year being successful.  Please be diligent in reviewing school emails and text alerts as these are our primary form of communication.

Consistency:

Consistency is key to our success this school year.  It is imperative that our faculty, staff, students, and parents continuously monitor their health and adhere to school policies throughout the school year.
