VARSITY LEVEL
At Memorial Day School, athletic performance is an active part of the school’s mission to educate the whole person. The foundation of our athletic philosophy lies in our determination to help our student-athletes develop the character and intellectual capabilities that will ensure their success in life. Lessons learned on the athletic field mirror those learned in life including academic excellence, leadership, character development, and physical fitness.
MemorialDay School competes in the Georgia Independent School Association (GISA) and enters teams in Cheerleading, Softball, Football, Basketball, Swimming, Baseball, Soccer, Golf and Track.
Over the past decade, MemorialDay School varsity athletics has become one of the most successful programs in the State of Georgia. Our Matador Blue Thunder football team has made state tournament finals in each of the last 3 years, bringing home the first STATE CHAMPIONSHIP in 2008 ( 13 – 0 ) for any Savannah school in over 26 years. The Blue Thunder was recognized as the Most Outstanding Savannah team as well as garnering a 2nd place national ranking. The Blue Thunder repeated as State Champions again in 2009 and went on to a third consecutive appearance for the GISA State Championship in 2010.
Since a final four appearance in 1995, the Matador basketball team has earned seven additional region championships, 14 state tournament appearances, five final four appearances, 3 state runner-up titles, and our unprecedented, undefeated (31-0) state championship in 1996. The Matadors proved to be on top of their game again in 2011 winning the GISA State Championship.
The baseball program began a resurgence in 1996 and has flourished with four region championships, 10 state tournament appearances, five final four appearances, 2 state runner-up titles and a state championship title in 2001.
The Lady Matador athletic program has made tremendous strides in the last three years. During the 2003 softball season, our Lady Matadors advanced to the GISA AA State playoffs for the first time in school history. In 2011, the softball Lady Matadors went on to another state playoff after winning a Region Runner-up title, while our Lady Matador basketball team followed with yet another state appearance. We are extremely proud of our Lady Matadors.
Our swimming team is the smallest in the state, yet, the numbers are deceiving because since 2008, our swimmers have gone on to compete in the GISA State Tournament and have placed within the top 10 teams despite not being able to compete in each event.
But the success of the Matador program is more than just about the team; it is also about fulfilling the dreams of our student-athletes.
Many of our athletes have furthered their competitive careers at the college and university level. In the past several years, student-athletes have gone on to such respected schools as Georgia Tech, The University of Georgia, St. Joseph’s University, South Georgia College, Georgia College & State University, Hampden-Sydney College, Brewton-Parker, Atlanta Christian, Valdosta State University, Armstrong Atlantic State University, Middle Georgia College, Georgia State University and Savannah State University.
Our student-athletes receive extraordinary support from our coaches, athletic director and school administrators promoting their athletic and academic abilities to college programs throughout the country.
MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL
The Middle School athletics program is a member of the Savannah Parochial Athletic League (SPAL). The purpose of SPAL is to promote, develop, direct, protect, and regulate interscholastic athletic competitions and to encourage fair play, good sportsmanship, and friendly competition among contestants and member schools. As a member of SPAL, middle school teams compete against other area private and parochial middle school teams. Memorial Day School enters teams in football, softball, and basketball.
